Our Curriculum

At Lessness Heath, we have worked hard to create a bespoke curriculum that truly caters to the needs of our local community, providing real breadth and depth in terms of subjects covered and preparing our learners for the world of tomorrow. We feel passionate about the need for our children to be part of the broader global conversation that surrounds them and engage with the myriad of opportunities it can present them with. As a result, our ambitious curriculum aims to open our children’s eyes to the fabulously diverse world around them, approaching events and knowledge from multiple perspectives so that they can make sense of the ever-changing global landscape that we all live within.

Our Curriculum Intent

At Lessness Heath we want our children to be curious about the world around them and leave us with a sound knowledge of the amazing planet that they live on, using this to ensure that they are part of the wider global conversation that happens around them every day.

Our children will respect and embrace the diverse variety of people, other cultures and ways of life that exist across the globe and know how these can benefit them in their futures, approaching others from all walks of life with empathy and mutual respect. Children at Lessness Heath will learn to truly know themselves and use this knowledge to help them strive for excellence in the choices that they make now and in their futures.

Our children will be challenged to consider events and knowledge from multiple perspectives, thinking critically about the past and present to inform their future decisions. They will grow into conscientious citizens who can question the world around them and form their own opinions based on a broad spectrum of knowledge.

Through a curriculum enriched by a diverse range of inspirational experiences, our children will aspire to be the best that they can be, using their learning as the fuel needed to truly ignite their futures and ensure that a wide range of opportunities are open to them as they move onto their next steps and beyond.

CAN Curriculum

A core aim of our curriculum design is to make it simple to understand for staff, children and parents. To help in this aim we have enriched our subjects with the ‘CAN curriculum’ – a set of wider perspectives that guide the way we plan and the experiences we aim to share with the children, each one with a clear purpose and goal that we want for our learners.

Because we want our children to understand these, we have also linked a symbol to each which makes it easier to remember and understand. Each wider perspective is derived directly from our overall school intent:

Widening Our World

We want our children to have a good knowledge of the world that they live in and be curious about the amazing planet we all share. We want to inspire our children to go out into the world and explore it as they grow older, understanding enough about the wide variety of places and experiences that await them by the time they leave us.

Understanding People

We will help our children to respect and embrace the diverse range of people, other cultures and ways of life that exist across the globe. We want our children to understand how diversity is a positive thing and can really benefit their futures. We also want to help our children to truly know themselves and use this understanding to make positive choices for their futures.

Fuelling Our Futures

We want our children to use their learning as the fuel needed to ignite their futures, making sure that a wide range of opportunities are open to them as they move on to their next steps. We want our children to be thinking about current events and world issues which will impact them in years to come, taking an active role in shaping the world they will grow up in.

Educating For Equality

Our children will be challenged to consider events and knowledge from different points of view. They will think about the past from many perspectives and not just those that are traditionally taught. We want our children to consider today’s world in the same way and use this understanding to help them become conscientious citizens who can form their own, fully informed opinions.

Please see individual subject pages for a more detailed overview of curriculum coverage in each area.  *Please note, we regularly review and update our curriculum throughout the year -  documents published online may not always exactly reflect teaching & learning in school.
